Mahogany Carved Cellarette ca. 1888 Hidden Compartment Lion / Sarcophagus Shape
Hand Carved Wormhole Mahogany Cellarette / Wine Cooler ca. 1888 this is carved with the date 1888. 1898 and has the names HUGERT SAVELS & CLARA CERDES their is a Jewish Star and Christian Cross covered with a crown with intricate detail that includes two winged Angle Mermaids, Vines of Flowers along with Scalloped Reliefs, along the bottom and shingled roof. The sides are just as nice the that have A family Crest or a Coat of Arms or maybe a Shield of some sort with fancy carvings around that. Please look at the photo's.
There is a Carved Lion that tops the whole piece that when slid back reveals a good sized hidden compartment. When doing a little research I found out that the name Savels goes back as far as the Cu sack war of 1066AD.
I believe that the chest was made as a 10 year anniversary gift to his wife. With the date of marriage being August 23rd 1888 there is no way of telling as I could not find any records to back that up. All an all it is an expectantly nice piece of artwork. It comes with the Original Skeleton key.The whole front unlocks and opens from the top and when open it hangs down to make even flat surface to use to mix or pour drinks. It will go on a pallet strapped and covered with a box. Measurements are as follows: 44" High x 40" Wide x 29 Deep.
