The dresser looks great, it was a pleasure meeting you and your children. Gorgeous American Empire antique chest of drawers.. Fully restored by yours truly to museum quality, I think you will find this piece spectacular!!

This piece is quite likely attributed to the work of master cabinet maker, Thomas Day of North Carolina. However one can never say with perfect certainty who the exact maker was, especially when many makers did not sign their pieces. Thomas Day was known not to have signed his pieces. I attribute this to him based on careful research of his works, including photos of a chest of drawers attributed by an expert on Day, which is nearly identical to this piece you are looking at.

Many other factors point toward Thomas Day as the maker... Including the overall style & composition of his pieces, the high quality precision and execution of his veneer work he was known for and the same quality on these drawer fronts. Also the selection of his beautiful veneers and the layout of those veneers on the piece is much more artistic and beautiful than most others, he did things not only very precisely but he had an artistic eye & flair for beauty!! Also the bun feet style and certain shape, some scrolled trim details, the two gorgeous & unusual curved drawer fronts, the drawer construction and many more details about this chest point towards Thomas Day as the maker. He was regarded as one of the finest cabinetmakers in the United States.

Day is regarded as the father of the North Carolina furniture industry. That is quite remarkable considering the status of our country at that time regarding slavery. Day served some of the wealthiest clients including two governors of North Carolina. Word spread quickly about his amazing craftsmanship and quality.

He was an artisan as well as a cabinetmaker. There is a bronze statue in honor of Mr. Day, it stands outside the entrance to the Museum of History, located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Institute recently hosted a comprehensive tribute to Mr. Day as an icon of the American entreprenuerial spirit and fine craftsmanship!

Mr Day is more than a North Carolina hero, he truly is an American legend! Wonderful crotch/flame mahogany veneered drawer fronts. Thomas Day was an artist, as well as a craftsman to select such stunning crotch mahogany and the skill to showcase the woods beauty, that ability it is second to none. He was known for his incredible grain selection & the very precise book matching of the grain where the veneers were joined like on the middle of the drawer fronts of this chest. The rest of the chest features solid mahogany & solid cherry woods. The secondary woods are poplar & pine. This 7 drawer chest has fantastic grains throughout.

This chest was entirely hand crafted. A rare and maverick feature is the style of the curved drawer front of the 2 upper drawers on the lower chest(photo). It features incredible precise hand cut dovetail joinery on all 4 corners of each drawer, the drawers also feature hand planed(chamfered) drawer bottoms, with no evidence of machine tooling. The drawers have solid brass inlaid keyhole escutcheons.

All of the locks work perfectly with the period style iron key. Sadly, one lower drawer lock is missing.... I restored the chest from top to bottom, including the two small upper level drawers with book matched flame mahogany veneer and some veneer restoration on the front of the chest. I restored the finish by hand, with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish showcasing the spectacular grains, the depth and luster of the finish is superb! The hand turned mahogany drawer pulls are original with a few exceptions, I really love the shape & detail of the mahogany knobs.

I restored the uppermost chest top with a highly figured solid cherry plank. The recessed flat panel sides and all the trim details, make for a stunning chest of drawers.

ISSUES: Consistent with any fine antique you will find nicks, dings, worn edges, veneer restorations including a gap(structurally sound) in the veneer of the bottom drawer front left side & buckling of veneer joint & imperfections in this chest, all making it the wonderful antique that it is! This amazing patina and character which has been acquired over 185 years on the planet!

Oh, the stories this great chest could tell! The wonderful rich colors, beautiful grains and amazing drawers by a historic cabinetmaker, all combine to make this a highly sought after chest of drawers.......... A classic beauty with superb craftsmanship awaits you!! I will shrink wrap this and help you load it at no charge.
