A FINE GEORGE III FLAMED MAHOGANY LINEN PRESS. England, circa 1800 Item # C102101. Featuring stunning flamed mahogany timbers, this fine George III period linen press is a most striking storage device. The doors feature absolutely stunning book-matched crotch-cut veneers framed in applied astragal moldings with inverted spandrels. These open to reveal an open interior, originally lined with drawers for organizing linens but since converted into a more convenient space for hanging clothing. It is crafted in two parts, the lower section with a pair of short drawers over two broad drawers, each with lovely original cast bronze pulls with reeded profiles terminating in acanthus relief. The drawers too are veneered with very pleasing cuts of mahogany veneers surrounded by cockbead moldings. Typical of the period, the dovetail construction is crisp and impeccable. The linen press is raised over original bracket feet.

A refined and elegant piece that emphasizes the natural beauty of rare woods without excessive embellishment, every aspect of the linen press speaks to careful craftsmanship, competent design and attention to detail. It is a piece that has survived in beautiful original condition for more than two centuries and if it is cared for this fine piece will continue to bring life and visual interest to homes well into the future. Measurements: 72 7/8" H X 23 1/4" D X 49 3/8 W. Condition Report: Drawers absent from upper linen press.

A fine early surface refinish with typical old scuffs and abrasions throughout; minor shrink cracks, etc. Left door retention hardware removed, right door lock not functioning.
