CHEST OF DRAWERS Antique English Georgian Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Dresser

ENGLISH GEORGIAN INLAID MAHOGANY SERPENTINE CHEST OF DRAWERS Circa 19th century Item # 602JHW06Z. A most handsome chest of drawers in every regard, the case is just glowing under the hand rubbed shellac finish with a deep ruby patination throughout.

The top is crafted of two planks of mahogany with a shaped front and turret corners to conform with the case, the edge beautifully reeded around three sides. It is affixed to the case from beneath with a series of rosehead nails through the topmost drawer blade and flanking fore-aft runners. The four graduated drawers are framed in notched stringer-inlays around the replaced ovular stamped brass pulls, these being period correct but probably originally being brass knobs instead of oval pulls.

A very pleasing and mellow horizontally grained mahogany was carefully selected by the craftsman for all of the drawers, each operating smoothly in and out of the case, the oak secondary wood hand dovetailed at the front and rear corners with the bottom board set in grooves on either side. Reeded edging continues in each drawer blade between the drawers and is completed by wrapping around the vertical reeded corner columns in little rings. It is a most magnetic. Strike point, the regular waxing over two centuries having lent a silkiness to the wood that is irreplicable.

It is a classic piece that defines an interior in a most dramatic way. 39 3/8 H x 46 1/2 W (at front corners) x 23 3/4 D.

Condition Report: Age appropriate blemishes/scars, surface burns and shrinkage cracks. Cockbead molding loss and patching around drawers. Left side of case with some curving to back strip at bottom corner, triangular patch to base molding. Triangular patch to back corner of base molding - backboards are replaced. May have originally sat on feet.
