Antique/Vintage Mahogany Wooden Table Top Box / Chest with Hobbs & Co Key & Lock. A very smart solid mahogany box in a very usable condition, lined with a cream coloured velvet like lining which considering its age is in very good order and not showing too many marks. It has a very smart Hobbs & Co lock. Alfred Charles Hobbs (1812 1891) was an American salesman for Americas foremost lock manufacturers, Jones & Newell in 1840. He came to London for the 1851 Great Exhibition where he managed to pick both a Bramah lock and the Chubb detector lock.

As a consequence he formed a company in London which was initially registered as Hobbs & Co. But later Hobbs, Ashley & Co in 1855, Hobbs, Ashley & Fortescue and latterly Hobbs, Hart & Co in 1860. I have not been able to tell how long the locks carried just the name Hobbs & Co name, it may have been just until the first name change in 1855 but may have been continued afterwards. Please be aware the some courier prices to some countries have increased considerably over the last month (as of April 2020). I have included a number of photos and these probably describe the item better than I can and form part of the description.

Condition: The box structure is sound with marks, knocks & dents from use, the back corner of the lid is chipped. The lid itself has some cracking on the grain. The original baize to base is in good order.

Comes with a 1 that works the lock. Internally the velvet like lining is in good order with the odd small mark.

Size: 34.5cm x 25cm x 14.5cm high. Approx 13 1/2" x 10" x 5 3/4. I will try to answer questions as soon as possible, but this will normally be in the evening.
