GEORGE III MAHOGANY CHEST OF DRAWERS WITH FLUTED COLUMNS. England, circa 1790 Item # 904KMB18P. This well preserved piece exhibits the best elements of the George III period: angular bracket feet, fantastic proportions and powerful architectural columns. These in particular define this chest of drawers, the quarter columns oversized with a great crispness to the fluting and finished in Doric capitals. Size and proportion are such an important part of design in these chests and this piece is perfectly balanced with delightfully restrained dimensions.

The top is crafted of mahogany veneers surrounded by a thumb and cove molding scraped from solid mahogany. The four drawers are graduated in size, the crisp hand dovetailed structure finished with cockbead moldings that frame out the drawer facade beautifully. It is raised over the neat and tidy bracket feet typical of the George III era, these original other than some replaced blocking (see condition notes). The typical red wash stain remains intact on the underside as well as faintly visible across the original backboards of the case. 29 3/4" H x 37" W x 18 5/8 D. Condition Report: Early finish with nicely developed patina throughout; finish with color variations, scars and blemishes as expected. Feet original, some cracking in feet (though all remain very sturdy and strong), corner blocking on left (facing) front and back feet replaced.

Age cracking to mahogany throughout, some old filling/patching in the side cracks. Some cockbead molding replaced around drawers. Spliced patch to corner of top molding. Back corner of top with spliced patch.
